Anyone that goes through life will encounter some sort of pain, it might not be physical, but it is pain that people deal with and it hurts to them. Both Victor Martinez with his story “Parrot in the Oven” and Kesha with her song “praying” show how pain is a natural emotion in this world but also how you can get over it and find peace within it. In “Parrot in the Oven” the main character has pain within his family and other relationships and in “Praying” Kesha has had many painful relationships. This is a similarity between the two.

One common theme in both texts is that dealing with past pain can make you stronger. In “Parrot in the Oven” Manny dealt with a lot of pain with his family and that only made him stronger. When he had pain in his life he found a way to deal with it and move on. In “Praying” it states, “…you brought the flames and you put me through hell” this statement shows that the relationship she was in caused her much pain throughout her life. In both texts the characters have been through much pain and are trying to find ways to get through it.

Although both texts has some negative pain in their lives, the end result in both of their lives changed them in different ways. In the song “Praying” it states, “I’m proud of who I am” This shows how Kesha has changed and found confidence in herself. In the book “Parrot in the Oven.” Manny comes home and realizes that his family is all he needs and he’s happy that he finally realized that.

In Both “Praying” and “Parrot in the Oven” Kesha and Victor Martinez show how pain is a very hard thing in peoples life. They show how you can find peace within yourself and move on with your life.

Victor Martinez’s brilliant witty book “Parrot in the Oven” takes place in California. A place where gang violence is very known for. Manny is a main character who is trying to get his life together. The Hernandez family is not very close and the go through many issues. One lesson that can be learned from this story is, issues throughout your life effect you more than you think.

From the beginning of the story text evidence shows that the characters in this story have a pretty tough life and issues in their life affect them in many ways. The dad is a drunk and he abuses his wife. Magda the sister struggles with self-confidence , Bernardo the brother cannot keep a job and the mother struggles with depression. All of these problems affects the family in many different ways and the main character Manny tries to handle all of his family while trying to handle himself. Although all of the family makes some bad decisions they would never expect it from Manny. Also Manny never seems to be heard, in the text it states “My words weren’t worth a penny in his ear. This evidence will later show how different issues effect the family.

Because Manny is so hurt it causes him to make some bad decisions and hurt others along the way. For example Manny keeps bringing up the fact that he wants to be a part of a gang .Manny is just doing this so that he can fit into the crowd and people will stop making fun of him. His family makes bad decisions and I think that it is causing him to make bad choices now.

The family issues are affecting everybody in more ways than they think and Manny is surely trying to keep it together. Some might say that just because your family is going through something doesn’t mean you have to make bad choices. This is a good argument and in many cases are true but this doesn’t hint at the reason why they are all hurting together.

After Manny realizes that him making bad choices is affecting his family , he tries to change his ways and become more mature in life. Manny finally understands that his family needs some help and issues are getting in the way of having a healthy family. Because Manny can relate this to him making bad choices he now understands. Issues throughout your life can affect you more than you think.

The book that i am currently reading is Parrot in the Oven by, Victor Martinez and this book is about a young boy who struggles to get by in life. His parents aren’t the best parents. This boy is just trying to make it through life until he hits a roadblock. The setting mostly takes place at his home, on streets and many more places. This boy lives near the sierra desert which is a hot place.The book setting is different from Fort Wayne setting being that it is a very hot place all the time which Fort Wayne is not a hot place all the time. In the book there is very few rainfall and in Fort Wayne there is more rainfall.  The first sentence in parrot in the oven states, “That summer….” Which states that this place my character lives in is hot.

The character that I am going to be talking about is Manny Hernadez who is the main character of Parrot In the Oven. The main problem with my character is that he has a lot of family issues and more to deal with than others. His dad doesn’t really like him and his father abuses his mother. Manny’s brother Bernardo can never keep a job so therefore they don’t have much money to live off of. When problems come his way his family doesn’t know how to face them. The character is different from me because he doesn’t know how to handle his problems and i do. On page one it states “Bernardo flipped through more jobs the a thumb flipping through a deck of cards…” This is my character and the problems he faces.

The hurricane is one of the most known natural disasters, it is an intense storm with powerful winds and heavy rain fall. Some seem to think that hurricanes are one of the most dangerous natural disasters , But sometimes others take hurricanes lightly. This storm is just as bad as the other natural disasters sometimes even worse than  what people see them as. Rachel Allen a victim of hurricane Harvey states ,” It’s devastating to watch your city being destroyed , this Hurricane has torn many families apart.” “These storms have ruined many families and torn apart many homes.” states an interviewed source. Hurricanes happen in many different places and are sometimes called different things such as , cyclone , typhoon ,and a tropical storm. These names mean the same thing but just happen in different places. Dominic Robinson from hurricane Katrina states, “all you can do with these hurricanes is sit and ride it out .” Some people choose to stay and some choose to evacuate their city or town. Some hurricane victims chose to speak out about these storms and some did not. Hurricanes are dangerous storms that you should watch out for.

Tsunami is a deadly storm that effects many people’s lives. First lets step back for a second and explain what a tsunami is.  A tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. Tsunami’s often happen in oceans or large lakes. One person speaks out about how it has affected their life, ” I mean you can’t really do anything but pray for things to get better and, just hope that your family and home is protected  ” As you can see this effects many people’s lives. There is no positive effects that come from these natural disasters . These kind of natural disasters can change some people physically and mentally.  Tsunami victims loose family members and some of their most famous landmarks , One of them being the Matsushima island a beautiful place and one of the most famous landmarks in japan. This landmark was taken away by a Tsunami and earthquake. This natural disaster affects many things.

Volcanic eruptions can harm many and these natural disasters don’t end well for many people. Volcanic eruptions happen when a mountain opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When this eruption happens gasses and rock shoot up making it harder to function with all the fumes around. Picture this rock fragments and fire all over the ground and lava fragments fill the air. One family speaks out about how it affected  their home. “Our home was destroyed and this is all we had left, there’s nothing we can do but sit and watch our home being in flames and smoke.” Volcanic eruptions happen in hot places mostly and in more of tropical places.  As you can see this can be deadly and you need to watch out for this one.

The effects of natural disasters is deadly and very harmful it can change many lives. These and many more natural disasters effect people every day. Students at Blackhawk Middle School will tryout for volleyball on August 16-17 in 2017. The volleyball coach , Mr.Hubley is looking for new elite players for his volleyball team to bring him a championship for this years sport. The girls will work long and hard to try and make this team. Students will be pushed to their limits. The coaches have some very hard critiques for these kids and all of them know how to take it.

The girls that try and make the volleyball team are pushing their self ,working hard, trying their best to impress these coaches who are making them better. The first cut is soon. Looking upon all of these girls our eyes catch one in particular and we pull her to the side she is really good. This girl states that this is her first year trying out for the Blackhawk Middle School, and she makes the first cut. The next day of cuts is pretty harsh. More girls get cut. The one we spoke to last night has gotten cut today . This girl is still really good and was a asset to the team.

Today is the day to pick the team. The day all of these girls have been waiting for.  the girls. One girls states “My stomach is in knots.” These girls sure did bring it. All of these girls deserve it. The team pick was finalized and all the girls were happy even if they didn’t make it , so all in all Blackhawk Middle School Volleyball tryouts were outstanding!

The last book I read was Tiger Eyes and it was a great book. It was about this girl who has a rough life and her dad is murdered. When she hears gun shots coming from her dad store she dashes to see what happen and sees her dad laying on the ground not breathing one breath. Then her mom, brother ,and her has to move with her dads sister. This story is basically just about how she deals with life when her dad is gone, and how she gets through the tough times with family by her side.The book that I chose from the library is called ”Dead to You.” I picked this book because I like suspense and I like being on the edge of my seat. The book is about this kid who was kidnapped when he was 7 years old from his family and he just got back to his family and trying to figure out life back at home.
